“Book in a Bag” Book Talk Assignment
1. Read a novel and complete independent novel study assignment #1. Use the knowledge you've learned and the context you've created to assist you in completing this assignment.
2. Make your Book in a Bag display.
- Using a paper shopping bag, decorate the outside of the bag with scenes from the novel you read. Remember to include the title (underlined) and author of your book.
- Think about the plot of the book, characters, setting, problem, and main events. Fill the bag with 5-10 items that depict or represent each part of the plot, characters, setting, etc. These items will be used as visual aids during your presentation.
- Remember to put your book in your bag too! Your book does not count as one of your 5-10 items.
3. Prepare your book talk presentation using the items you have included in your bag. Your presentation should include:
- Book Title and Author
- Description of the book’s plot using the items in the bag, remember to include an interesting opening to grab the listener’s attention, characters with descriptions, setting details, main events, problems, and solution.
- Use note cards to ensure that your presentation is in a sequence of events that makes sense to your audience. Number each note card in order of when you use it in your presentation.
- Evaluation of the book, would you recommend this book to other, why or why not.
4. Finally, think about your presentation skills and practice your speech. Your speech should be between 3-5 minutes. Points will be deducted if the speech is less than 3 min. No points will be deducted if the speech is over 5 min. Remember:
- Posture
- Don’t Read from note cards, just glance if necessary.
- Be fluid, no ahh, like, etc...
- Speak loudly and clearly.
- Look at the audience.
